How I work

One of the major challenges facing the social sector is the siloed nature of our work. There are seemingly endless organisations, programs and services, and for the most part they operate in isolation.

I support individuals, communities, organisations, and networks to think holistically and work collaboratively. This involves:

  • Providing conceptual tools
  • Coaching
  • Co-designing strategies and plans
  • Modelling a collaborative mindset

An analogy from medicine

The social sector is similar to modern medicine, which incorporates different surgeons and physicians for almost every body part.

General Practitioners help us to maintain our overall health. They make inquiries about our habits, identify our goals, perform health assessments, make diagnoses, provide advice, and help us navigate a complicated health system that includes a wide array of specialists.

This is often the missing link in our work – the generalist who understands the breadth of the field, and can draw on the various specialisations to achieve holistic outcomes.

Motivation

I am motivated by:
  • The belief that all people should have the opportunity to reach their potential
  • An awareness of the causes and consequences of place-based disadvantage
  • Frustration with narrow, short-term initiatives that perpetuate the status quo
  • The potential of collaborative/ systems oriented approaches
  • The opportunity to work with leaders committed to innovation and lasting change

Influences

I am influenced by:
  • Capability theory
  • Co-design
  • Complexity theory
  • Social ecology
  • Systems theory
